Movember/An Homage to the Beastie Boys
Greetings everyone~
For those of you wondering what Marianella and I have been up to, it's been the same old, same old-working like rented mules. However, it is the most wonderful time of the year-Movember. As with the previous two years, I took the opportunity to let my freak flag fly with a rainbow of colors above my upper lip. There was a caveat this year-my intention after growing the full beard last year was to go back to the roots of my first year with facial hair, which meant just growing a mustache. However, Marianella and I served as Godparents on Thanksgiving weekend to the daughter of one Marianella's close family friends. In late October when I asked the question if it would be okay to have my mustache in the inevitable pictures on the special day, an uncomfortable pause hovered at the dining room table. Evidently there were concerns about capturing the legacy of the young girl's Godfather looking as if he drove to the Church in a conversion van. I conceded-I would sport a goatee until after the celebratory day.
The goatee wasn't a bad look for me-I projected a professional and mature demeanor that actually produced its fair share of compliments. It was the antithesis of what I was trying to achieve. What is Movember without second glances from co-workers and students and questions as to how long Marianella would tolerate the bigote (Spanish for mustache)? Fortunately, I had four days at the end of the month to disturb with the 'stache.
Throughout the month, my idle thoughts would often turn to how I would showcase this year's look. The choice was quite easy actually; it was just exercising patience until the end of the month when my mustache was at its bushiest. During my college years, back when MTV actually used to show music videos (which I realize has become my generation's "when I was your age, I walked through 3' of snow to get to school"), The Beastie Boys blew the doors off of the tried and true with their video for Sabotage by satirizing the '70s cop show. At a time when MTV dominated our apartment's television, my roommates and I absorbed this video, never tiring of its hilarity. If you have never seen it or haven't seen the video recently, here it is:
The decision was made-in honor of my favorite video from one of my favorite bands, I would pay tribute with my characterization of Vic Colfari (aka "The Rookie"). Perhaps the accuracy is a bit off (Colfari's a bit chunkier since his days as the rookie), but it's my best effort at replication:
With my co-star Reynaldo:
In addition to my month-long planning to portray Colfari, on the very last day with the mustache I happened to be wearing glasses when I looked in the mirror at work with my collared shirt and was struck at who was looking back at me-I was channeling Ned Flanders. I didn't quite have Ned's outfit ready for a photo shoot, so I improvised; not sure if you see Ned in these pictures, but in person, let me tell ya. . .it was eerie.
Hidely-ho neighbor!
Au revoir mustache, until next Movember:
With the calendar turning to December, I once again am showcasing my baby-faced look and staring Christmas and summer vacation squarely in the eyes. Marianella and I will be back to Minnesota shortly after Christmas Day, as we are celebrating this year in Lima with her family. Happy Holidays to you all and hope to see you in the New Year.
Take care everyone~Tim & Marianella
